Bus lane trial

About the bus lane trial

We’re testing new bus lane times on a route between East Milton Road and London Road.

The trial, which we are planning to start at the beginning of October 2026, will help us assess if we can improve bus journey times and reliability by extending bus lane hours during the day and introducing them at weekends.

Reliable and efficient bus services:

  • are essential for getting around the city
  • encourage more people to choose public transport over the car
  • provide a vital transport option for many residents who do not have access to a private vehicle

With millions of passenger journeys made each year, Edinburgh's bus network underpins the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of the city and region by providing access to:

  • jobs
  • education
  • healthcare
  • leisure

Edinburgh has a great bus service, but we can do more to support bus companies by reducing congestion and delays along key routes. Bus lane times are one way that we can improve this.

Background reports on the trial

In February 2024, councillors on the Transport and Environment Committee asked for a trial of bus lanes times, 7am to 7pm, seven days a week.  Please note this pdf is not accessible. If you need help with reading it, please email the project team.
